Thank you, retirees

By the time this article goes to print students will have completed the 2012-2013 school year, teachers will be wrapping up their last day of post-planning, and seniors from NOHS and OCHS will be eagerly awaiting Saturday’s graduation ceremonies. Families throughout our state and nation will begin to turn their thoughts toward beach vacations, summer camps, and family gatherings as the carefree days of summer are now upon us. Many students will begin summer jobs, internships, or busy schedules filled with athletic or academic endeavors.  Those of us left behind, known in the education world as twelve-month employees, will continue the daily work necessary to prepare for the 2013-2014 school year and eagerly await the return of our nearly 7,000 students on August 7.  For those of you fond of counting, that is only 75 short days away.

Yet, one segment of our educational family will be concluding their school year for the final time.  Tuesday will have been their last day with students; Thursday will conclude their final post-planning day with teachers and co-workers; Friday, or a day to closely follow, will find them retired from the only profession, passion, and job many of them have ever known.  Thus, this week, we honor and celebrate our retirees.  The individuals listed below are retiring or have already retired at some point this school year. These fine people have assisted hundreds if not thousands of students by driving a bus, preparing a lunch, cleaning a building, mending a scrape, or teaching a lesson.  We thank them for their service to Oconee County Schools and to the students, parents, and stakeholders that make up our wonderful community.

We often do not celebrate each other enough or take the time to say thank you to those who have made a difference in our lives. I encourage you to do just that if someone on this list has had an impact on your student’s educational journey.  As always, I would love to hear your thoughts, stories, ideas, or, perhaps this week, your appreciation for someone on this list at
